Creative Thinking

From My Friend Dr. Robert Anthony

One of the fastest ways to increase the Flow into your life is to
raise your energy to have more life force and more power.  But how
do you go about raising your energy?

In the graph below 0% represents no energy and 100% represents
maximum energy.

0%—————–25%————–50%————–100%

If someone is at 0% energy, then they are dead. Unfortunately, many
people are living just above 0% energy.

At the other end of the graph, 100% represents the highest positive
energy available. As you move up the scale, you will have more of
the good things in life because you are vibrating and evolving at a
higher level.

The higher up you move on the scale, the more easily you will be
able to use the Law of Attraction. All you have to do is think a
thought, attach emotion to that thought and then it manifests
rapidly because your life force is flowing freely and is not
blocked.

Your energy level not only attracts money into your life, it
attracts everything else, including other people. If you have a
very
dense or low level of energy, you are going to manifest that same
energy you are projecting. In other words, you will attract people
and relationships into your life that have the same low level, dense
energy.  This is explained in the Levels of Awareness that you are
studying.

What most people really want in their life is energy without even
being aware of it. People think they want money, but from what you
are learning, you realize that money is just another form of
energy.

Stop right here and think about this because it is a key point to
opening the flow of money into your life. When you fully understand
this you will see the whole world differently.  We can sum it up
this way – if you raise your energy level, you will raise your
income. It is that simple. (to be continued…)

Today will bring you a new awareness, a lesson or a manifestation
that you are making progress – IF YOU LOOK FOR IT!  No matter how
large or small, please record it. It will only take a few moments
and will AUTOMATICALLY put you in the Flow.

Truly Caring for Your Success!

The secret of wealth is consciousness of wealth. In order to experience abundance, you have to be abundant. Abundance is your true nature, and when you think, act and live according to it, you will manifest abundance. The rich in mentality get richer while the poor in mentality get poorer. The accumulation of material wealth begins with wealth consciousness. Pursuing spiritual development before working on wealth creation is the key to attaining both inner and outer riches. The outer is reflection of inner…

The secret of health is consciousness of health. Disease is a lack of ease psychologically and physically. Conflicting thoughts and feelings in your consciousness is what causes this state of distress. When you notice yourself becoming sick, watch for conflicting thoughts that have arisen within your consciousness and resolve them. Either push them all one way or the other, or find a way to hold them in a harmonious way. External remedies only cure symptoms but dealing with consciousness cures at root…

The secret of secrets is the consciousness of secrets. All the truths about life are not secrets, but they are hidden from us due to our ignorance. By thinking about the discovery of truths as a search for the secrets, we motivate our subconscious mind to go on a treasure hunt. The greatest treasure in this world is wisdom, and life is to be played as a treasure hunting game. Treasures are meant to be appreciated and so when you think of truths as secrets, your appreciative mindset will draw them all to you…

Programs That Offer Affordable Assistance

Growth Central is dedicated to an integral approach to personal growth and relationships. An integral approach to personal growth and relationships suggests that there are three particularly important elements of human consciousness: states, stages, and shadow. States of consciousness include the normal states of waking, dreaming, and sleeping, and also span the spectrum of spiritual experiences, from gross, to subtle, to causal, to nondual. What all states share is that they are temporary, and for the most part can be accessed, through, meditation, contemplative prayer, mind machines, binaural brainwave entrainment, (or simply by chance), in just about any order. Stages of consciousness range from egocentric, to ethnocentric, to worldcentric, to kosmocentric, to pneumocentric, to energocentric, and will affect how one interprets and understands various states. Stages are permanent acquisitions of the psyche, they unfold in a developmental order, and the sequence cannot be bypasses. The shadow elements of consciousness are those first-person impulses that, for whatever reason, have not been owned by an individual, and therefore appear in consciousness as “not self” (“I’m not angry, but my boss sure is,” or “I’m not angry, but I sure am depressed.”)

We understand the importance of unconditional love and acceptance on both the spiritual and psychotherapy paths. Without that larger perspective, without that love of the whole person just as they are, you can get stuck doing “endless psychotherapy.” But once placed in that context of unconditional acceptance, you can use the same old human “stuff” (guilt, anger, shame, etc) that we all bring to the path as grist for the mill, and fuel for real integral growth and consciousness.

Mental Attitude = Success

Posted by: Timothy Kendrick on: July 26, 2009

Hinted to 196 × 127. Best displayed as an inte...Image via Wikipedia

Success is in the blood. There are men whom fate can never keep down they march forward in a jaunty manner, and take by divine right the best of everything that the earth affords. But their success is not attained by means of the Samuel Smiles-Connecticut policy. They do not lie in wait, nor scheme, nor fawn, nor seek to adapt their sails to catch the breeze of popular favor. Still, they are ever alert and alive to any good that may come their way, and when it comes they simply appropriate it, and tarrying not, move steadily on.

Good health! Whenever you go out of doors, draw the chin in, carry the crown of the head high, and fill the lungs to the utmost; drink in the sunshine; greet your friends with a smile, and put soul into every hand-clasp.

Do not fear being misunderstood; and never waste a moment thinking about your enemies. Try to fix firmly in your own mind what you would like to do, and then without violence of direction you will move straight to the goal.

Fear is the rock on which we split, and hate the shoal on which many a barque is stranded. When we become fearful, the judgment is as unreliable as the compass of a ship whose hold is full of iron ore; when we hate, we have unshipped the rudder; and if ever we stop to meditate on what the gossips say, we have allowed a hawser to foul the screw.

Keep your mind on the great and splendid thing you would like to do; and then, as the days go gliding by, you will find yourself unconsciously seizing the opportunities that are required for the fulfillment of your desire, just as the coral insect takes from the running tide the elements that it needs. Picture in your mind the able, earnest, useful person you desire to be, and the thought that you hold is hourly transforming you into that particular individual you so admire.

Thought is supreme, and to think is often better than to do.

Preserve a right mental attitude the attitude of courage, frankness and good cheer.

Darwin and Spencer have told us that this is the method of Creation. Each animal has evolved the parts it needed and desired. The horse is fleet because he wishes to be; the bird flies because it desires to; the duck has a web foot because it wants to swim. All things come through desire and every sincere prayer is answered. We become like that on which our hearts are fixed.

Many people know this, but they do not know it thoroughly enough so that it shapes their lives. We want friends, so we scheme and chase ‘cross lots after strong people, and lie in wait for good folks or alleged good folks hoping to be able to attach ourselves to them. The only way to secure friends is to be one. And before you are fit for friendship you must be able to do without it. That is to say, you must have sufficient self-reliance to take care of yourself, and then out of the surplus of your energy you can do for others.

The individual who craves friendship, and yet desires a self-centered spirit more, will never lack for friends.

If you would have friends, cultivate solitude instead of society. Drink in the ozone; bathe in the sunshine; and out in the silent night, under the stars, say to yourself again and yet again, “I am a part of all my eyes behold!” And the feeling then will come to you that you are no mere interloper between earth and heaven; but you are a necessary part of the whole. No harm can come to you that does not come to all, and if you shall go down it can only be amid a wreck of worlds.

Like old Job, that which we fear will surely come upon us. By a wrong mental attitude we have set in motion a train of events that ends in disaster. People who die in middle life from disease, almost without exception, are those who have been preparing for death. The acute tragic condition is simply the result of a chronic state of mind a culmination of a series of events.

Character is the result of two things, mental attitude, and the way we spend our time. It is what we think and what we do that make us what we are.

By laying hold on the forces of the universe, you are strong with them. And when you realize this, all else is easy, for in your arteries will course red corpuscles, and in your heart the determined resolution is born to do and to be. Carry your chin in and the crown of your head high. We are gods in the chrysalis.

How To Explode Your Confidence Beyond Belief

Posted by: Timothy Kendrick on: July 24, 2009

If you are not one hundred percent satisfied with the current
status of your life as it is right now in terms of anything
including relationships, finances, career, parenting, etc. there is
only one thing that you need to assess and that’s your decision
making process.
You see, our lives are shaped by our experiences and all
experiences are the result of a decision.
If you decide to touch a burning stove, the result will be that you
get burned. If you decide to jump in a pool of water, the result
will be that you get wet.
Sometimes however, the result that we experience from a decision
isn’t so clearly visible prior to making that decision.
In other words, we think that by making a certain decision, we will
achieve a certain result but somehow that result turns into
something else. And that’s when things get tricky.
And this is why if areas of your life aren’t moving along as
planned, you must assess your decision making process.
Decisions are driven by two things; the confidence in one’s ability
to achieve a certain result and more importantly, emotions.
The reason why I say “more importantly” is because emotions
ultimately guide every decision and will always override one’s
confidence.
For example, if you decide that it’s time to lose weight or quit
smoking, you can have all the confidence in the world in your
ability to achieve those goals but if your emotions point you in
the opposite direction, you will ultimately never achieve those
goals.
Therefore, to truly enhance any areas of your life, you must work
on both your confidence and your emotions.
Steve G. Jones is a clinical hypnotherapist who has been practicing
hypnotherapy for over 20 years and has worked with the likes of
just about anyone ranging from regular everyday folks to high
profile celebrities.
In fact, pretty soon he will have his own television show called
“The Celebrity Hypnotist.”
Steve also has the largest collection of hypnosis recordings on the
planet and is well respected in his field.
Some time ago, Steve realized that while he was helping improve
various areas of people’s lives using the power of hypnosis on a
subconscious level, that working on someone’s confidence was a must
no matter what.
It’s almost like a prerequisite for true transformation. The only
problem was that people would have to fly to his Savannah office
for the hypnosis session and pay a pretty penny to do so.
Steve decided to create a program that would equip any person with
the ability to build confidence using hypnosis right in the privacy
of their own homes, which would make it much more convenient and
affordable.
And so he did just that. The only problem; it was missing
something.
While Steve’s program was in fact ultra effective at building
confidence
, it didn’t focus on emotions on any level.
Knowing that the only true way to deal with one’s emotions is
through Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT for short, Steve knew he
had to incorporate the principles of EFT into his program.
But Steve is an expert in hypnosis, not EFT.
So what did he do? He decided to enlist the the help of a man who
is arguably the world’s foremost EFT expert……Brad Yates.
While it certainly was no easy task (it took nearly a year), Steve
finally did track Brad down and got him to join forces with him to
create what is perhaps the most powerful formula for building
confidence known to man.

Brad Yates.

Building a Wealth and Prosperity Mindset

Posted by: Timothy Kendrick on: July 14, 2009

One sure way to boost your odds of becoming successful is to have a mindset
geared toward wealth and prosperity. Why? Because the actions you take on a
daily basis – right down to the amount of effort you put toward your goals – stem
directly from your state of mind.
Believing you can accomplish something is the first step in actually doing it.
Unfortunately many of us pay little attention to our mindset, and end up
creating a whole lot of struggle and difficulty for ourselves in the process! The
good news is that creating a wealth and prosperity mindset can be achieved
quickly and easily with a little know-how and some determination.
This report will share some helpful insights on:
• Exactly what a wealth and prosperity mindset is
• Why it’s vital to have one if you want to succeed
• How to develop your mindset for wealth and prosperity
What is a Wealth and Prosperity Mindset?
The common definition of “mindset” is: a mental
attitude or inclination, or a fixed state of mind.
So, a wealth and prosperity mindset would
mean an attitude or inclination that causes us
to focus on abundance.
It may surprise you to learn that most
people focus on the opposite. They focus
on wanting more prosperity, seeking
greater wealth, and pursuing both at any cost.
In other words, they focus on the fact that they do not yet have wealth or
prosperity, which means they actually have a scarcity or poverty mindset. They
focus more on what they’re lacking, the things they can’t afford to buy, and
even worse – feeling resentful toward people who are already wealthy.

Does this describe your general attitude, too? If so, don’t let it get you down! It’s
actually very common to have this mindset, and you can turn it around starting
right now.
All you need is the willingness to start thinking in a different way and the
courage to take actions based on this new way of thinking. Don’t worry; you
won’t have to take groundbreaking actions; just one step at a time will move
you in the direction you want to go.
Scarcity Consciousness vs. Abundance Consciousness
The very first step in building a wealth and prosperity mindset is to start
expanding your awareness of wealth and prosperity.
Right now you may be in the habit of looking at the dark side of every situation.
Perhaps you worry about how little money you have or you feel the heavy
burden of too many bills. In order to turn this perception around, make it a point
to see the abundance that surrounds you:
• Be grateful for the money you do have.
• Feel optimistic that you will receive more soon.
• Believe you can improve your life and make more money.
It’s also important for your perception of wealth to be in line with attracting it.
You can’t have a negative opinion of wealthy people and expect to get wealthy
yourself! It just won’t happen because you block wealth from coming to you
every time you speak or think negatively about wealth or wealthy people.
Instead, start paying more attention to wealthy people you can admire. Read
about great philanthropists or celebrities who do important work with their
money. Seek out success stories about people who started with nothing and
became millionaires.
The more you do this, the more you’ll change your perception of what it means
to be wealthy and you’ll begin drawing more tangible expressions of wealth into
your life.

A Common Blockage Against Feeling Prosperous
While you’re focusing more of your attention on
success and wealth, it’s also important to
deliberately turn your attention away from
examples of scarcity – both in your own life and
in the world in general.
What is it that makes us obsess over negativity
and disasters? Like staring at a horrible car wreck
when driving by, we sometimes can’t help
ourselves and have to look!
Unfortunately, this habit carries over into all other areas of our lives and we find
ourselves obsessing about problems and challenges too. The problem with this is
that it keeps us focused on things that make us feel powerless and out of
control.
In order to create a true prosperity mindset, you must train yourself to turn your
attention away from anything that distracts you from focusing on your wealth
and well being.
That doesn’t mean hiding your overdue bills in a drawer or refusing to face
reality. You don’t have to become a “Pollyanna” to focus on abundance, but
you do have to stop obsessing over the challenges and problems in your life.
A good rule is: Do what you can to improve the situation, then immediately
move on to more positive pursuits.
Refuse to wallow in setbacks; avoid spending hours a day worrying about
money; don’t talk yourself out of taking action because you might possibly fail.
Be proactive and precise in your actions and keep focused on where you want
to be, not where you don’t want to be.
If you were taking a road trip, rather than looking back at where you started,
you’d keep focused on your destination and the route you need to take to get
there.

Perception is Everything
The way you view your life and experiences is extremely
important. Why? Because most of us live in reaction
mode, that is, we tend to take action on our experiences
after something happens.
If we perceive something to be dangerous, we take action to defend
ourselves. If we perceive ourselves to be poor and lacking in opportunities,
we see no point in working to improve our lives.
The problem with reactions like these is that they usually become self-fulfilling
prophecies. Being overly-defensive can actually provoke attacks, and being
overly-pessimistic can attract more and more issues that prevent us from
improving our lives.
Rather than living with a reactive mindset, you can learn to start living with a
proactive mindset and change your life in ways you wouldn’t have believed
possible before now.
Limits Only Exist in Your Own Mind
What are your perceived limits when it comes to being rich and successful?
• Do you really believe you can make more money than you do now?
• Do you think that a lack of opportunities prevents you from doing so?
• Does it seem like there are too many obstacles between you and your
dreams?
Make a list of every possible limitation you can think of that prevents you from
being wealthy, and be sure to include both inner and outer limits. Include
information about your own fears and doubts, as well as any perceived
shortage of opportunities in your life.
Then examine each one carefully and decide if it’s really true or not. You may
be surprised at some of the things you’ve convinced yourself to believe!
For example, if one of the items on your list is, “I can’t make more money
because I don’t have a college degree,” ask yourself if there are any millionaires
in the world who didn’t graduate from college with a degree, or even go to
college at all. Of course there are!

This process is incredibly eye-opening and will help you see where you’re
placing limitations on your own success.
It’s also important to keep challenging these false perceptions on a regular
basis, because some of them may be embedded pretty solidly into your
subconscious mind.
Logically, you may know that there’s nothing holding you back, but then you still
find yourself hesitating or procrastinating.
If you keep challenging your limiting perceptions, and you take action despite
them, they’ll begin to fade away and eventually disappear. You’ll have
convinced yourself that they’re not true after all.
Taking the Right Actions
Now that you’re starting to transform your
perceptions of limits, you’re in a much better position
to begin taking focused action. The question is: What kind
of action should you take?
All of the richest and most successful people in the world have one
thing in common: they found a way to contribute value to the world
and are rewarded well for their efforts. Think about that for a minute.
Becoming wealthy is not about wishing for wealth until it falls out of the sky and
lands on your doorstep. At least it doesn’t work out that way for most people.
The majority of us will have to work for our wealth – but that’s not such a bad
thing if we choose work we truly enjoy.
The seeds of your wealth are tucked away in a surprising place: in your greatest
interests and passions. Of course, simply following your passions isn’t enough. You
also have to find a way to make your passions pay.
That means finding a way to use your interests and talents to contribute value to
the world. This can be done in any number of ways.

Here are some ways you can follow your passion while contributing value:
• Write a book about a topic you love.
• Create a product in line with your interests.
• Offer a service doing something you enjoy.
The possibilities are endless! Give some thought to the things you truly enjoy and
the skills and experience you already have. Then ask yourself, “How can I use
these assets to contribute value and generate income?”
Changing the Way You Work
Once you have a clear idea of the right activities to begin drawing wealth into
your life, it’s time to begin approaching these activities with a newfound sense
of purpose and a “can do” attitude.
Most of us go about this in the wrong way and then get frustrated when it
doesn’t seem to be working. The wrong way would be: taking small actions
while hoping for big results right away and then concluding we failed because
we didn’t progress quickly enough.
Instead, try this:
• Take bold, consistent actions every day.
• Step out of your comfort zone as far as you dare.
• Be confident about your abilities and expect positive results.
• Be patient; don’t expect overnight success.
• Focus most of your attention on enjoying the journey.
Can you see the difference between these two approaches? One leads to
certain failure and the other virtually guarantees success. When you aren’t so
focused on needing to see results, you relax and let them come naturally.
Ironically, such a relaxed attitude actually helps us make much faster progress
than if we keep stopping to pull our hair out in frustration!
Happiness, Prosperity, and Success
One of the most common misperceptions about wealth is that achieving some
monetary goal will make you happy. It’s true that having more money allows for

greater financial freedom in life, which can be seen as a facet of happiness –
but true happiness doesn’t come from anything outside of you.
Happiness is a state of mind.
Can you recall any wealthy people who are unhappy
with their lives? Just off the top of your head you could
probably recite the names of half a dozen celebrities
who are constantly struggling with addictions, relationship
turmoil, legal problems, and worse.
Money didn’t make these people happy, and it can’t make you happy either.
If you want to be happy, then you must decide to be happy now – regardless of
your problems and challenges. Just having a ton of money in the bank won’t
make problems go away unless those problems are directly related to a lack of
money.
No matter what you do, there will always be issues and events that threaten to
detract from your satisfaction and happiness. However, how this affects you is
your choice.
The greatest power you can ever develop is the ability to focus on the good so
you can be happy right now – no matter what else is happening around you.
It’s time to stop the mental recording that loops over and over, “I’ll be happy
when…I’ll be happy when…I’ll be happy when…” Right now is all you have.
Let tomorrow take care of itself. Instead, focus most of your energy on making
this moment the best it can possibly be. Mastering this skill alone can make you
the richest person on the planet!
Enjoy the Journey!
The biggest drawback to traditional goal-setting is that it encourages us to focus
so strongly on an end result that we don’t recognize the gifts we receive along
the way. Be sure to pause now and enjoy the scenery from where you stand,
even if you haven’t reached your ultimate goal yet.
Doing this regularly can provide great encouragement and motivation to keep
moving forward, but even better, it makes the entire journey seem as rewarding
as the destination!

12 Steps To Living Your Dream Lifestyle And Winning The Game of Life

Posted by: Timothy Kendrick on: July 10, 2009

Living a dream lifestyle gives richness to life; you live with excitement, passion, a sense of purpose and a feeling that life is a miraculous gift. You get a spring in your walk, a smile on your face and your energy levels are high. And there is that special something that people feel when they are around you. Welcome to the good life!

Living a dream lifestyle affects all areas of your life. Your health gets better by far. Automatically. Your relationships get far better, automatically (men, you know what I am talking about – women are more attracted to us when we feel good about ourselves, isn’t it?). Your finances improve, automatically. Even if you have problems, they don’t swallow you up, you live on, and rarely pay attention to the doom-side of things. You know what I mean? Not much ruins your day.

The opposite, not living your dream, not living your passions, makes life seem like a struggle, a daily grind, a curse, even.

So how do you win the game of life and live your dream lifestyle?

You do so by setting certain specific things in order. And as with all things, you go first, always. You have to set three things about you in order first.

1. Get clear on what your dream lifestyle looks like by understanding what your top 5 passions are. A passion is not a goal, it is a way of life. Without clarity, you will get lost. You need something to aim for, and a vision of how it looks like when you get there. (Did you know that most people would struggle to tell you with certainty what their top 5 passions are?)

2, Figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are. Do not bother to fix your weaknesses. Don’t. I will show you what to do with them. Focus only on your strengths. That is where you freedom lies. (Did you know that most people would struggle to tell you with certainty what their mental, emotional, spiritual and physical strengths are?)

3. Understand your wealth profile, where you fit in the game of life, and what networks and support you need. There are only 9 possible roles that exist, and we all belong to one of the 9. For example, maybe you are a creator (a maker of content, e.g. a writer, painter or cake maker or chef), or a mechanist (a maker of systems, processes, tools, etc). And we all need each other. The trick is to know where you fall, so you know who else you need. And more. How to arrange them, attract them, and how to release the value found in your strengths and multiply it, leverage it.

Next, you need to understand the fundamentals of life, how life works. If you don’t, you will end up wasting much energy, getting frustrated, using the wrong approaches, and generally get nowhere, which is what most people do on this planet. So here are the fundamentals, in a very small nutshell…

4. Plan the dive, then dive the plan. You need to make a plan, not just any plan, but a life plan. And there is a right way to do this. Yes, I know, life does not always work as planned. But you still need a plan.

5. Understand the Law of Attraction and how to apply it. Most people know it intuitively, some consciously even, but they do not know how to apply it correctly (and this also explains the prayers that never get answered). If they did know how to apply it correctly, worrying would automatically stop to exist in their system. Worrying is an indication that you do not know how to apply the law of attraction properly.

6. To gain certainty, understand the science behind creation. Faith is good. But certainty is better. Understand how our world comes into being, how quantum physics works, and you will suddenly move from hope and faith to certainty. And that, my friend, is like adding twin-turbos to your manifestation vehicle.

7. Information is the key. Faith is running through the dark, sometimes in an unknown forest, head first. You will get to the other side, but you are likely to hit a few trees and bears along the way. Certainty is turning on the lights. Information = lights. Save time (and your ass). Get informed.

8. Apply the 80/20 rule to everything. It will prevent you from wasting most of your efforts.

9. Gain financial intelligence. Without it, your efforts will be scattered in the wind every week. With it, your efforts will go towards growing a garden that will forever feed you even when you stop working. You see, you have to know how to arrange your affairs so that, over time, you progressively move from having to work for money, and onto having money work for you. Most people never take this step! And they are doomed to forever have to exchange their time for currency. Imagine having currency come to you with you having to exchange your time for it.

And now, you are a whole lot closer to beginning to live the dream…

10. Understand very well how to use these tools and you will never get stuck: projects, tasks and strategic next actions. This is a science and art-form that is known by very few, yet it is so easy to learn. Paralysis will forever never, ever bother you again.

11. Connect your strengths to your wealth profile to create abundance in all areas of your life.

12. Get help! Learn how to outsource, delegate and cooperate. This way, you will be free to do only what you love and are strong at, you will have other people do what you are weak at, and you will actually move forward much, much faster and far, far more rewarding, financially and otherwise.

That is it in a very, very tiny nutshell. If you are looking for a top quality set of instructions that shows in detail and exactly how to carry out each of these steps and much more, David Cameron Gikandi and myself have arranged one for you over here: http://www.revolutionscape.com

6 Quick Sanity Tricks By Therese J. Borchard

Posted by: Timothy Kendrick on: July 8, 2009

Awhile back I asked you for your sanity tricks, techniques that help you fight the forces of the dark side. Here are some of the gems.

abc1. Learn the alphabet.

Do you know why the vowel “I” comes well before the vowel “U”? Because a person must take care of herself before trying to help someone else or the world. It’s the same logic that flight attendants use when they swear to you that your plane isn’t going to crash, but in the event that it does, you’d be smart to fasten your own oxygen mask before helping the kiddies. Do it in reverse, and you’ll all run out of air.

2. Stop the singing lessons.

I could have used this one a long time ago: “Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.” In other words, you can’t change other people. Mean creatures inhabit every planet. But you can change yourself: the way you relate to them, or your reaction … to their singing.

stoplight3. Get a yellow light.

Some folks intuitively know how to relax and slow down. And some go to therapy to learn how. The latter group operates with two speeds: go and stop. They go, go, go, and go even faster until they crash. And that’s never pretty. Which is why they need a yellow light signaling … Hit the brakes! … Transition, dude! … Yo, Speedy! You’re missing the good stuff!!

4. Play out your hand.

This was an excellent reminder by a reader for those moments when I’m griping about the cards that I was dealt in life. Granted, in proper perspective, my hand is a winner. I live in a free country where I actually get paid for whining. I have two “spirited” kids who have all their limbs. And I have a freezer stocked full of dark chocolate. But I often focus on the stinkers in my hand: a severe mood disorder and some other health conditions.

Playing out our hand is about living the stuff of the Serenity Prayer: tucking away the loser card we can’t get rid of, trying to steal our opponent’s King if we can, and knowing when to draw.

5. Write it down.

In an August 2003 issue of Australian Journal of Psychology, University of Texas psychologist James W. Pennebaker summarizes dozens of studies linking expressive writing to improvements in immunity, academic performance, social behavior, and mental health. In a 2003 British Psychological Society study, results indicated that writing about emotions might even speed the healing of physical wounds.

If journaling about pain can heal your knee scab, think about what writing might do for your heart, mind, and soul! Articulating my journey from the abyss of severe depression and back has certainly contributed to sanity in my life and I can vouch for others, as well.

6. Think outside the symptoms.

A woman who struggles with anxiety told me that when the panic minions whisper into her ear things like “this is the worst thing that’s ever happened,” “we’re doomed,” and “there is no way out of this,” that she scolds them. “I’m not buying whatever you’re selling, so save it for someone else,” she’ll say. I’ve been learning to use the same technique with my depression– to think outside my symptoms–so that when I hear myself repeat to the person staring back at me in the mirror unfair assessments like “you’re a failure,” “you’re lazy,” and “you’re good for nothing,” I know that it isn’t me talking, it’s my mood disorder.
